We conclude that Aerococcus urinae’s antimicrobial susceptibility for penicillin and cefurox-ime have a strong positive correlation using disk diffusion method. Based on the results we draw to the conclusion that breakpoints for penicillin established by EUCAST could be used to interpret susceptibility to cefuroxime and ceftriaxone.

Upper part of the figure shows a blood isolate of Aerococcus urinae grown for 24 h on blood agar in 5% CO 2. The small colonies with clear α-haemolysis can be seen. Lower part of the panel shows a blood isolate of Aerococcus sanguinicola grown on the same plate. The colonies are larger, whiter and the haemolysis is not as pronounced. sanguinicola n=13, A. viridans n=14 and A. christensenii n=1). This corresponds to an incidence of approximately 14 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year for A. urinae. The A. urinae and A. sanguinicola patients were old (median age >80 years), predominately of male gender and underlying urological diseases were common. Aerococcus urinae is increasingly recognized as a potentially significant urinary tract bacterium. A. urinae has been isolated from urine collected from both males and females with a wide range of clinical conditions, including urinary tract infection (UTI), urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), and overactive bladder (OAB). A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities.

The mean patient age was 82 (range 24-101) years. In this study, 120 aerococcal isolates, A. urinae ( n = 81) and A. sanguinicola ( n = 39), of European origin were tested for susceptibility to six antimicrobial agents using the methodology recommended by The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). 2017-09-21 · The number of susceptibility reports on A. sanguinicola are relatively sparse compared to A. urinae [ 7, 11 - 14 ]. A lack of standardized susceptibility test methods and interpretive criteria for Aerococcus spp. have been problematic for clinical laboratories and clinicians [ 9 ]. 2011-08-01 · A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola ( n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae ( n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities.

More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. A. sanguinicola are catalase-negative, vancomycin-susceptible, gram-positive cocci arranged in clusters and tetrads, as are all Aerococcus species except A. christensenii (which is arranged in short chains).

Usual Susceptibility Pattern These organisms are typically susceptible to penicillin, amoxicillin and vancomycin. Penicillin and/or ceftriaxone resistance has been described in A. viridans. Susceptibility to clindamycin, tetracyclines, quinolones, and TMP/SMX is variable.

The Open Microbiology Journal , 11 , 160-166. Both Aerococcus species were susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics with modal MICs for penicillin based on 308 A. urinae and 65 A. sanguinicola isolates in the MIC range of 0.03-0.06 mg/L [ 1 ]. In the present study, penicillin susceptibilities were in agreement with these findings.
