Appraisal and coping processes should be characterized by a moderate degree of stability across stressful encounters for them to have an effect on somatic health status and psychological symptoms. These processes were assessed in five different stressful situations that subjects experienced in their day-to-day lives.

Methods: A total of 110 caregivers of older patients who previously had a stroke participated in this descriptive and cross-sectional study. The Zarit Burden Interview and Lazarus coping strategies questionnaires were used for data collection. Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: (1) emotion-focused coping, which refers to the regulation of emotions that are generated by the appraisal process, such as anger or sadness in response to the appraisal of loss, anxiety, or fear in the case of the appraisal of threat, and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry, in the case of the appraisal of challenge; and (2) problem-focused coping, which refers to the management of the problem itself. Lazarus and Folkman theorized two types of coping responses: emotion-focused coping, and problem-focused coping. When a person is facing extreme stressful situation, it is likely the person will evaluate the stressful situation as according to Lazarus and Folkman (1984). An important aspect of this instrument lies in its distinction between coping intentions and coping strategies. It is assumed that individuals act according to their intentions or goals. This is more specific than merely stating that there are different coping functions, as Lazarus and Folkman (1984) do. Lazarus and Folkman 2 believe that each individual represents a unique combination of individual and environmental factors and that stressors result from person-environment interactions, which cause the person to appraise the situation, appraise the coping resources that are available to him or her, and employ a repertoire of coping behaviors.

The two parts, use (Part A) and effectiveness (Part B), are measured on a 4-point rating scale (scored from 0–3).
